Winter High School sports start back up this week, including District 10. District 10 officials took it upon themselves to handle the rescheduling of all region games and matches that were supposed to be held during the shutdown. The Bears boys basketball season got started with a loss in their opener, and the very next day, winter sports we’re halted. Let’s take a look at this years Union City varsity team.

Coach Shawn Thompson is in his fourth season as head coach, and has compiled a 37-33 record. Last years team was 8-15, and 5-7 in the region. They did make the playoffs, losing in the District 10 Class 2A first round to Wilmington. They did however, almost pull the upset.

Union City graduated three starters, but the Bears have a young core back to lead the way this year. Jamon Higley was the team’s second-leading scorer last season with 9.7 points per game and was voted to the all-region second team.

The Bears will turn to senior Shane Uber and juniors Matthew Bennett and Cole DeSimone. Bennett, an all-region second-team pick, had a breakout sophomore season as the guard led the team with 13 points per game. DeSimone, another guard, was fourth on the team with 9 points per game and Uber is a guard/forward. The Bears could also receive contributions from sophomore forward Wyatt Post and junior guard Kyler Shaffer, who led the football team as the quarterback.

Union City has a young team this year with just three seniors on the roster, but the Bears could still be a tough team to beat in region play. If Union City players buy in to new roles, the Bears could be ahead of schedule and contend for the region this year.
