Bears Lose in First Round of Playoffs

From Staff Reports

Union City was shorthanded in its playoff game with West Middlesex. Yet, in the effort to try and exact revenge from last year’s season-ending loss to the Big Reds, the Bears put up a good fight. But in the end West Middlesex once again left as the victor.

On Friday night at Meadville’s Bender Field, West Middlesex beat Union City 28-6 in the District 10 Class 1A quarterfinals.

The Big Reds (7-3) move on to face Farrell in the semifinals next week. A site and time for that game is yet to be determined.

For Union City (5-5), the season closes here. Caleb Stull led the offense with 73 yards on 20 carries. Marshall VanTassel ran 21 times for 69 yards in the loss. Both players performed well without Tallin Henry, Austin Jaquith or Logan Kesselring getting carries to draw away defenders

“When you’re down number one and number two rusher, you better go to number three and number four,” said Gunther. “And we did that and they gave it their best effort for sure.

“(My seniors) are part of a group that’s now been to the playoffs for four straight years and they ought to be very, very proud of that. We’re just in search of that first playoff win. I was hoping they would get it, but hopefully they are able to give the strength to the underclassmen to get it next year.” added Gunther.
