Bears Blow Through Cardinals
After the Bear’s defense shut down the Cardinals, Matt Krause blocked the punt to give Union City excellent field position. Immediately, Austin Jaquith ran the ball in UC’s first touchdown of the night. After the two point conversion, the Bears were ahead 8-0. As the clock ran out in the first quarter, Logan Kesselring found running room on the field for another TD, and Austin Jaquith converted 2 more points. The Cardinals could not convert or recover from their multiple flags. The UC defense forced Cochranton to go 3-and-out, which brought the Bear’s offense back onto the field. Jaquith brought the ball to 5-yard line after a 52-yard run. On 3rd and goal, however, a flag pushed UC back to bring up 4th and 12. Before the half ended, the Bears managed to score 8 more points on a quarterback keeper and an untouched Caleb Stull – 24-0.
Union City began the second half strong, too. The defense stopped the Cardinals to take over on downs deep in Cochranton territory. The team quickly took advantage of their field position. The offensive line opened the field for Stull to run in for 6-points. Danny Ruckman, Marshall VanTassel, Jaquith and the rest of the Bear’s defense shut down the Cardinals again. Despite a pass interference call on UC on 4th and 20, Cochranton still could not convert for a 1st down. Again on their drive, the Bears found the end-zone for another TD from Stull. Cochranton managed to cross the goal line in the 4th quarter. After a failed attempt at a 2-point conversion, the Cardinals ended the Bear’s shut-out.
These would be the only points Cochranton would contribute to the final score of the game. In their final scoring drive of the game, Stull found the end-zone again. After breaking tackles, the running-back had an open field. Ryan Newton made the first extra-point kick of the night to make the final score 43-6. With this victory, Union City is 2-0 in the conference and 2-2 overall. The Bear’s next game with be Friday September 20th at 7:00 PM.
