Panthers defeat Union City in Baseball Quarterfinals
Saegertown scored twice in the seventh inning to beat Union City for the first time this season with a 7-5
win in the District 10 Class 2A baseball quarterfinals on Monday at Ainsworth Field.
Saegertown (11-8) moves on to the semifinals Thursday against Lakeview, while Union City, the Region
4 champion, ends the season 11-7.
The Bears swept the Panthers during region play this season, but Saegertown raced out to a 3-1 lead and
led 5-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Bronnan Higley
crushed a three-run double to tie the game.
Saegertown responded in the top of the seventh inning. Brandon Gaus led off with a base hit and went to
second on a Dawson Bartholomew sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout, Wesley Price crushed an RBI double.
Price drove in three runs on two doubles.
Landon Caldwell followed with an RBI single to give the Panthers a 7-5 lead. Keegan Hornaman started
the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk, but the Bears couldn’t complete another comeback.
Bartholomew had two hits for Saegertown, while Higley and Hornaman each had two for Union City.
Dylan Flinchbaugh tossed six solid innings to get the win for Saegertown, and Ryan Sherry threw the
seventh to get the save.
