Bears Wrestling lose close match to Greenville

The Union City Bears varsity wresting team traveled to Sharon on Saturday, Feb 2nd to compete in the D-10 Team Duals. They opened up in the Quarter Final Round against The Greenville Trojans. In a win or go home match-up, Head Coach Jeff Hiner and company came ready for a battle. The dual was filled with District 10 ranked wrestlers up and down the lineups. Full of lead changes, questionable calls, and flat out down to the wire contests, the match came down to the final bout, Greenville crawling away with the 33-30 victory.

The match started at 113 lbs. With Greenville getting the fall, over Freshmen, Quintin Hedderick. At 120 lbs. Sophmore Jayson Solliwoda came up huge with a 9-5 decision. That put the Bears down by 3 with Senior standout William Burgess at 126 lbs., coming out and quickly getting the fall in the first period. With The Bears up three point,s Greenville would tie it up at 132 lbs., with a narrow 4-1 victory over sophmore Tallin Henry. Senior, Judah Gardner at 138 lbs., and junior, Austin Jaquith 145 lbs., each getting falls. With the Bears up 12, Greenville would get the technical fall at 152 lbs., over senior, Shad Haskins, making it 21-14 Union City. At 160 lbs. Senior Esteban Waldman won 3-2. Junior, Marshall VanTassel, 170 lbs. lost 9-3. With Union City still leading 21-17, senior Gavin Henry 182 lbs. won by fall, making the score 27-17. At 195 lbs. Sophmore Nick Kaday lost 7-2, and 220 lbs. Tyler Hedderick lost 15-3, making the team score 27-24. Greenville closed out the match with a narrow 1 point vicyory at 285 over senior Matt Long, and a win by fall at 106 lbs. over Sophmore Evan Smith.

Union City will travel next to the Clearfield Duals, with a possible makeup match left this year against Conneaut, who finished #2 in the D-10 Team Duals.
