By Jasmine Desarae

Union City – It was a special and emotional night for Union City’s power forward and center Bronnan Higley, his teammates and the Bears’ coaching staff. In their game against the Saegertown Panthers, Higley became the 10th person in Union City Basketball to score 1,000 points in a career.

With the support of the Bears’ players, the ball was continuously fed to Higley. Before the end of the game, Higley needed to score 27 or more points to join the 1,000 club. By the end of the first half, Higley already scored 18 of his necessary points.

In the second half, Higley fought to achieve nine more points. Higley also played his part on defense, blocking, rebounding and stealing every chance he could get his hand on the ball. Higley never hogged the ball, never taking away his fellow teammates opportunities to score.

Higley went to the foul line to shoot two. If he would have made both, Higley would be one-point away from 1,000 points. He went 1-1, leaving him with two points to go. When the ball touched Higley’s hands again, he drove into the hoop for a layup.

Immediately, the crowd and his entire team rose to their feet applauding the senior. Throughout the gymnasium one could feel the pride and happiness for Bronnan Higley. Coach Thompson presented Higley with the game ball as the crowd cheered with excitement. Higley instantly jogged across the court, climbed the bleachers and handed the ball to his dad. Both of his parents greeted him with a hug. For anyone watching, it was difficult not to be teary-eyed.

Congratulations to Bronnan Higley and the entire Union City School. It has been a fantastic year for UC sports this academic year!
