Pennsylvania State Police continue to investigate an officer involved shooting shortly after 4 pm at the Union City Dollar General store, that left one man dead in the parking lot. Captain Dan Hines, commander of Pennsylvania State Police Troop E, said that members of Troop E’s vice unit were involved in a detail in which they were attempting to make the purchase of suspected stolen chainsaws from a known individual, Keith Hawley, 27.

Hawley had met the troopers, and had gotten into a police undercover vehicle, but then pulled a gun on the two troopers, and a fight began. According to State Police, one of the troopers tried to disarm Hawley, and the other officer shot him with the troopers weapon.  On the spot, troopers began first aid, notified EMS, but Hawley died on the scene.

Erie County Deputy Coroner John Maloney pronounced Hawley dead at 5:05 p.m. Hines said the suspected stolen chainsaws had been advertised on an internet sales site. The troopers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duty during the investigation.

District Attorney Jack Danieri said a press conference will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the State Police barracks in Lawrence Park.
