By Marye Parker Hawley Staff Writer

Isaac Barringer explains what UCFSC (Union City Family Support Center) is about, “Empowering parents, not enabling them. All of our services are geared for the family to be self-sufficient….to connect themselves to the services, we will point them in the right direction. We will connect families with the services they need. We also help people apply for help with REA (Northwest Rural Electric Co.) when they fall behind on their electric bill. It is called Member To Member.”

“He adds, “Our big one is PAT, (Parents As Teachers) which is home visit services. An employee, registered with PAT, will go in the home with an activity and discuss parenting strategies with the clients to help them become better parents. Also they keep track of child development and health and help if parents need extra help.”

“We offer a play group, held at 7 North Main Street. This is a free service, last 1 hour, and it is similar to a play date. This is on each Wednesday morning, from 10 till 11 o’clock. Have to preregister with Miss Heather. This is a great way for children to interact with each other.” He adds, “We strive to be The Gateway To The Community! We want to build programs and relations that benefit everyone.”

The Union City Family Support Center (UCFSC) is a community service center for over 400 families from Union City, Corry, Wattsburg, Waterford, Mill Village and surrounding areas. Hours of operation are 8am – 4pm. They prefer you to have an appointment, but walk-ins will be served. They go by need based, immediate need…immediate results.  Isaac says, “I am absolutely grateful to have this job, it helps me save for college. It is a great place to work, and close to home. People here are incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable on how to help the community.”

They have other services, if you, or anyone you know need any form of help… stop in and see Isaac. He is eager to help the community.
